Spam is a big issue at the moment, and the Internet is overflowing with information on it. This page lists a few resources on the subject, but is not intended in any way as a definitive guide.
Instead, think of the resources below as useful starting points for finding the information you need, and always remember that Google is your friend.
Enforcement
Spam.govt.nz is a website of the Deparment of Internal Affairs, who oversee enforcement of the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act.
General resources
- A White Paper on Spam, a more detailed overview of spam by the author of this site. Written with a New Zealand perspective and aimed at the layman (i.e, I've tried to make it readable and as jargon-free as I can).
- CAUCE, the Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial E-mail, probably the oldest anti-spam lobby group. The US site is no longer very regularly updated, but it contains numerous useful links and a good overview of the situation. CAUCE has regional affiliates - the Australian and Asia-Pacific groups are especially active.
- The SpamHaus Project, Steve Linford is one of the Internet's premier anti-spam mavens, and his site is an excellent repository of information, opinion and links to other resources on the subject.
Spam from a New Zealand perspective
- Consumer Magazine, New Zealand's Consumer watchdog, has a useful section on spam
Technical resources (software downloads, guides and so on)
- TUCOWS, one of the Internet's major download sites, has a good range of items for both Windows and Macintosh computers.
- DMOZ, the Open Directory project, has a huge range of links to products, blacklists, whitelists, anti-spam (and pro-spam!) tools: the site is vast, but here is a good starting point.
Resources describing the Legal Situation with spam
- The spamlaws site has a wide range of information on the legal situation with spam both in the USA and in the rest of the world.
- EuroCAUCE has put together an extensive site documenting the state of anti-spam legislation in the EU, Scandinavia and the former Warsaw Pact nations.
